hey, random lady who just walked in, who probably thinks that this store is actually the store next door, please stop humming. i am almost 100% positive that you have never really heard little black submarines by the black keys. humming something imaginary and random, thinking that it goes along/sounds like/is complementary to the actual song is not only a delusion, it is annoying.

when the going gets tough

last week was a little rough.

esther margaret ran a very high fever for three days. the only times she would get up was if she saw me eating cheese or the little einstein's theme song came on.

claire got into another fight and had her third brush with death in a year.

amid the chaos, i didn't realize that our house was getting so filthy it looked and smelled like a barn. by the end (they are both fine), our dining table was covered in unfinished projects, tools, bicycle parts, syringes and medicine for claire, and everything that our very cranky and sick child would want to grab and put in her mouth. the floors, after not being swept for a week living with four dogs and constant in and out traffic, looked like a dusty bacterial carpet was starting to form over the wood. the washer was full of things either stained by urine or vomit. it was so dirty that it kind of looked like either you were in the house of someone really insane and old or you were in the projects.

now that things are back to normal, the house is clean again and esther margaret no longer looks like a miniature woolly mammoth after she's been walking around the house.

when i was pregnant people told me that if you stick your tongue out at a 4 week old baby, it will mimic and do it back. EM never did. she didn't at 4 weeks or even 4 months. it didn't start until the last month, and now she mimics everything.

i didn't know what it would take for esther margaret to go from part time to full time as a bi-ped. i don't know about all kids but for mine, the desire to carry things around has taken her from a recreational walker to a pro.

beautiful people unite

my unofficial (which is the same thing as official) favorite model is daria werbowy. she is beautiful for all the right, normal and traditional reasons but my favorite thing about her is that the more often you see her, the weirder her face becomes. she can pass for a jane birkin, girl next door type but take another glance and there's something distinctively alien-like about her. possibly her far set eyes or her pinched, rodent like nose or uncommonly broad nose bridge. in any case, she cut her hair recently and i think she is even more freakishly beautiful than ever.
