i read to em at least twice a day, usually three. it's been a long time since i've read children's books. to be honest i don't think i even read many children's books when i was little. i remember the pokey little puppy, robert louis stevenson and shel silverstein. anyway, i guess a lot has happened between these two periods of life, and i've started to notice certain things that i hadn't seen before.
this book is called "love you forever". it's a story about a devoted mother who shows her love for her son in one way by going up to his room and sneaking in at night to hold him and tell him she'll love him forever. it's real cute when she goes in on her hands and knees when he's an infant and toddler. i have done this with em.
however, she still does this when he's 16 years old (note the teddy bear on his bookshelf. and what is that laying on him? a possum?).
oh and apparently when he's a 30 year old single man. no problem that she probably has osteoporosis, is on blood thinning medication and has varicose veins that she never had lasered. or that a 180 lb grown man doesn't even seem to wake up when his 90 lb elderly mom comes in, picks him up and cuddles with him on her lap.
so the story comes to full circle when his mom is growing old and sick. here he's returning the favor. except i think this is so awkward. and mom sleeps with her glasses on. there are several other peculiarities in the book (such as, i think her son is a single gay dad), but this blog is not about that.
this is a book called "at night". it's about a little girl who can't sleep so she takes her pillow and blanket onto the roof of their urban home, soaks in the night air and the big world around her and is able to sleep. i like this story except the girl's mom has extremely weird arms.
here, she is sleeping in a nightgown with extremely large armholes. her arm looks a bit deformed and possibly anorexic.
and here (same arm), it looks like her shoulder/arm area is webbed and her shoulder is sort of caved in like a play doh figure that has been laid on one side in the heat for too long. i like the story, but i definitely notice mom's right arm every time.
this is a book called "pretzel", about a a prized dachshund who is the longest dog in the world, trying to win the love of greta, another dachshund. pretzel tries to give her gifts and show her his tricks, but she doesn't give in to his charms. so what is a love stricken dog supposed to do? follow her around like a stalker, naturally. here is pretzel in the background while greta jumps into a hole after a green ball that he had given her.
here is pretzel rescuing greta. if you can read in the text, it says 'pretzel had watched her all the time and now had rushed to help her'. romantic or creepy? i would say the latter.
"cowboy small" is one of esther margaret's favorite books, and was one of jeremy's favorites as a kid. it's about the life of a cowboy, which includes caring for his horse, mending fences and gathering cows.
has anyone ever noticed how large, extremely muscular and defined cowboy small's butt is?
and the "interesting" (interesting = camel toe) waistline of his jeans.
and let's just hope gramps fell asleep before cowboy small went to bed.
