my first how-to post, not as good as lesley's, or anyone who posts how-to's on blogs
a few days ago, nm shared this post on making drinking glasses from empty wine bottles. i wanted to try it so i asked jse to help me make one. the pictures aren't great, i didn't have my camera, just my phone.
and i would like to clarify that i did not do any of the work so if you ask me questions, i will likely look blank. do not be confused by the plural pronouns.
first, if you are working in a cold room (like a garage) and don't have proper heating, you may want to use one of these. i don't know what it is, maybe something for welding. or doing something bad to rats, cows or people. however it did warm the room.
we chose to use a wine bottle and a bottle of pellegrino.
we took the wheels off of a skateboard (jse found it, possibly in or near the same place he found what he refers to as his "dumpster jacket") and screwed them to a board, we used a 2x12. you will need a glass cutter.
we placed the bottle on the wheels as ball bearings and then spun the bottle while keeping the glass cutter stationary. the aim is to make a straight cut around the bottle. you have to use a bit of pressure to make an impression.
then over a lighted candle, rotate the bottle over the flame over the place you cut. then dunk into iced water. you will end up with something like this:
but wait, we're not done! do not try to serve mojitos at this point!
we used this to sand down the rough edges (and a belted sander too, not pictured).
and then we put a vinyl stencil on, and used a sand blaster hooked up to an air compressor to abrade the glass. jse said that it's a good idea to contain it because the sand will get everywhere and it is also expensive. the large plastic tub pictured contained my stored summer clothes until an hour before this picture was taken.
and then voila! a for adam, alpha, whatever. the first prototype wineglass cup!
